Apple considers improving Safari on the iPhone Duo
Apple is contemplating changes for Safari on the iPhone Duo to optimize the use of the outer display.
01. A redesign for Safari's interface
Apple is exploring changes to enhance Safari on the iPhone Duo. The goal is to allow websites to utilize more of the outer screen space. However, the company has not yet determined the method to implement this.
02. The challenges of optimal integration
The main challenge is to allow web pages to extend under the side controls of Safari without making parts of the site inaccessible. Jen Simmons from Apple explained in an article on October 23 on WebKit that an existing setting could enable this. However, Apple's research indicates that many sites do not handle it correctly.
The viewport-fit="cover" setting
This setting allows a web page to extend into areas typically reserved. Developers must ensure to leave enough space around important content to prevent it from being obscured by the interface. According to Simmons, many sites fail to make these adjustments on every edge.
03. Towards better content management
Apple is considering other solutions to give developers more control while minimizing the risks of content being obscured. For example, the background of a header could extend across the entire screen, while navigation links would remain in the visible area.
Current limitations of Safari
Currently, Safari 27.1 limits web pages to the area adjacent to the controls and uses the page's background color to fill the remaining band. This restricts the width available for content on the outer display.
This organization stems from screen proportions. Apple has placed the controls on the side of the device to maintain more height for apps and web pages, given that the outer display is shorter and wider than other iPhone screens.
04. New features in Safari
With Safari 27.1, a new feature allows for automatic two-page PDF viewing when the iPhone Duo is held partially folded like a book. Flattening or closing the device returns the document to a single-page view.
Developers can also test experimental support to detect the posture of the folded screen and adjust content around the device's central crease. These features are available with Safari feature flags, while the proposed change for content under the controls is still under consideration.
05. Choosing the right iPhone
