Customs and VAT in France: What Does an Imported iPhone Really Cost?

01. Understanding the Import Costs of an iPhone in France

Importing an iPhone from China may seem advantageous at first glance. However, it is crucial to understand the additional costs that are added to the initial purchase price. This includes VAT, customs fees, and other potential charges.

Initial Purchase Price

The price of an iPhone can vary depending on the model and condition (new or refurbished). Here is a price range for recent models:

• iPhone 14: between 900 and 1,200 euros
• iPhone 13: between 700 and 1,000 euros
• iPhone 12: between 600 and 900 euros

VAT in France

When importing an iPhone, it is essential to take VAT into account. In France, the VAT rate is 20%. This means that you will need to add 20% to the purchase price of the device. For example, if you buy an iPhone for 1,000 euros, you will have to pay 200 euros in VAT.

Customs Fees

In addition to VAT, customs fees may also apply. These vary depending on the type of product and its value. Generally, customs fees for smartphones are about 2.5% of the device's value.

Thus, for an iPhone costing 1,000 euros, you might have to pay approximately 25 euros in customs fees.

Total Import Cost

To summarize, here is an example calculation for an iPhone priced at 1,000 euros:

• Purchase price: 1,000 euros
• VAT (20%): 200 euros
• Customs fees (2.5%): 25 euros
• Total cost: 1,225 euros
