Customs and VAT in France: What Does an Imported iPhone Really Cost?

01. Introduction

Importing an iPhone from China may seem attractive. However, it is essential to understand the additional costs related to customs and VAT in France. This article guides you in evaluating the total cost of your purchase.

02. Cost of an Imported iPhone

The price of an iPhone in China can be very competitive. But it is crucial to consider the additional fees.

Purchase Price

The base price of an iPhone varies depending on the model and options chosen. Expect to pay between 600 and 1200 euros for recent models.

Shipping Fees

Shipping fees also need to be considered. They can range from 30 to 100 euros depending on the shipping method chosen.

03. Customs and VAT

Understanding VAT

When you import an iPhone, you must pay VAT. In France, the VAT rate is 20% on the purchase price, including shipping fees.

Calculating VAT

Here's how to calculate VAT on an iPhone:

1. Purchase price: 800 euros
2. Shipping fees: 50 euros
3. Total amount: 800 + 50 = 850 euros
4. VAT: 850 x 20% = 170 euros

In total, the cost of your iPhone will be 800 + 50 + 170 = 1020 euros.

04. Customs Fees

In addition to VAT, customs fees may apply. Generally, for smartphones, there are no additional customs duties. However, always check the current regulations.
